Bringing Campsites to Life: Why Aerial Photography Could Transform the Way Visitors Choose Where to Stay

Helping Visitors See More, Understand More and Book With Confidence

When choosing a campsite or touring park for a caravan, motorhome or camping trip, there is one question many visitors want answered before they make a booking:

“What is it actually like there?”

A campsite listing might contain photographs of pitches, facilities and amenities, but photographs taken from ground level can only tell part of the story.

  1. How is the campsite laid out?
  2. Where are the pitches in relation to the facilities?
  3. What does the surrounding countryside look like?
  4. How close is the beach, lake, river and forest?
  5. What is immediately beyond the campsite entrance?

These are all questions that can influence a visitor’s decision.

At TRW Marketing Services, we recently explored how professional aerial photography and videography can help answer those questions through two campsite projects — Hunters Moon Club Campsite in Dorset and White House Beach Club Campsite in Kessingland, Suffolk.

The objective wasn’t simply to produce attractive drone footage.

It was to help potential visitors visualise the experience before they book.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

Traditional campsite photography remains important, but it often provides a collection of individual snapshots.

Aerial photography adds another dimension.

From above, visitors can see the campsite as a whole — its layout, positioning, surroundings and relationship with the landscape.

This is particularly useful for touring campsites, where the location itself is often a major part of the holiday experience.

Aerial imagery can help answer questions such as:

  • “Where will I be staying?”
  • “What is around me?”
  • “How close am I to the beach?”
  • “What does the surrounding landscape look like?”
  • “Can I see how the pitches are arranged?”

Instead of asking a potential visitor to imagine the location, aerial content allows them to see it for themselves.

Project One: Hunters Moon Club Campsite, Dorset

Our first project took us to Hunters Moon Club Campsite, situated on the edge of Wareham Forest in Dorset.

The campsite provides a peaceful setting for caravans, motorhomes and campers, while being just a short distance from the market town of Wareham.

From the ground, a visitor can see individual aspects of the campsite.

From the air, however, the story becomes much clearer.

Our short aerial video shows the overall layout and organisation of the campsite, giving viewers a better understanding of how the site sits within its surroundings.

It also helps communicate something that is difficult to convey through words alone — the sense of space and setting.

For someone researching their next touring holiday, this additional visual information can make the difference between simply browsing a listing and becoming genuinely interested in the location.

Why This Matters

A potential visitor isn’t necessarily looking for a technically perfect photograph.

They want to know:

“Could I see myself staying here?”

Good aerial content helps them answer that question. See example below of Hunters Moon Club Campsite near Wareham.

Project Two: White House Beach Club Campsite, Kessingland

Our second project took us to White House Beach Club Campsite in Kessingland, Suffolk.

Here, the relationship between the campsite and the coast becomes an important part of the story.

The aerial imagery focuses on the well-laid-out campsite, the nearby beach and the immediate surrounding location.

From an aerial perspective, visitors can better appreciate how the campsite relates to the coastline and the wider destination.

Kessingland’s position also makes it an appealing base for exploring the surrounding area, including nearby Southwold and the Broads National Park.

Again, the objective was not simply to create a promotional video.

It was to provide information visually.

A visitor considering a booking can see the campsite, understand its position and begin to imagine what their own stay might look like.

And that’s where powerful visual content can become much more than marketing. See example below at White House Beach Club Campsite.

From Engagement to Bookings

There is an important distinction between getting someone to look at a campsite and giving them enough confidence to book it.

A good campsite listing needs to do both.

Visual content is particularly powerful because people naturally respond to imagery and video. Aerial footage can encourage visitors to spend longer exploring a listing, share the content with their travelling companions and develop a stronger understanding of the destination.

That creates a potential journey:

See the campsite → Understand the location → Imagine the stay → Build confidence → Book

Of course, aerial photography alone cannot guarantee additional bookings.

But by removing some of the uncertainty around what a campsite actually looks like, it can become a valuable part of the decision-making process.

The Missing Piece in Many Campsite Listings

As a Caravan and Motorhome Club member and an active and regular user of campsites myself, this is something I have experienced first-hand and find it frustrating to not be able to visualise the site.

When looking through campsite listings, I often find myself wanting to understand the bigger picture.

The photographs might show the facilities and individual pitches, but I still want to know:

  • Where exactly is the campsite?
  • What’s around it?
  • How close is it to the coast or countryside?
  • What will I see when I arrive?
  • What is the overall character of the site?

Those are difficult questions to answer with a handful of conventional photographs.

Aerial photography and video provide another way of telling the story.

Why Video Makes the Difference

Photography is excellent for showing individual views and creating strong visual assets for websites and listings.

Video takes the idea further.

A short aerial video can provide a visual journey around the location, showing the campsite from different angles and giving the viewer a sense of scale, place and perspective.

It can also be re-used across multiple marketing and promotional channels:

  • Website campsite listings
  • Booking pages
  • YouTube
  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Social media advertising
  • Digital advertising
  • Promotional campaigns
  • Tourism marketing

One professionally produced aerial shoot can therefore create a library of valuable marketing assets rather than a single piece of content.

Helping Visitors Make a More Informed Choice

Ultimately, good campsite marketing isn’t about simply making somewhere look attractive. It’s about helping the right visitor understand why that location is right for them.

Aerial imagery can show the things that traditional photography struggles to communicate — the layout, key on-site facility blocks, scale, surroundings, landscape and relationship with nearby attractions.

For a campsite operator, that means giving prospective visitors more information at the point when they are deciding where to stay.

And for the visitor, it means being able to make a more informed decision.

They can see it. They can understand it. They can imagine themselves there.

And that is where visual content can become a powerful part of the booking journey.
